Chiesa della Madonna delle Grazie - Pisa in Tuscany
Built in 1958 outside the castle, it houses the 13th-century image of “Our Mother of the Thanksgiving”, the patroness saint of the Upper Val di Cecina. On the triptych, consisting of three wooden panels on a golden background, stands out the “Virgin on the throne and Child blessing Saints Girolamo and John the Baptist”.
The work is similar to the painting executed by Coppo di Marcovaldo in 1268 for the “Chiesa dei Servi” in Orvieto, in particular in the structure of the throne and in the two suspended angels, although other stylistic elements would be datable to an earlier period. A side altar houses a painted cross of the end of the 13th century, where Christ’s position on the cross and the piece of the loincloth, from which the anatomy of the human body is visible, could represent one of the most extraordinary examples of Giotto’s technique. Today, the painting is attributed to the Duccean school between 1330 and 1340.
