Chiesa di Santa Maria, Pomarance - Pisa in Tuscany
The new residential area was designed between 1950 and 1960 with many public works, including the theatre, the schools, the church and the club. The design was commissioned to Giovanni Michelucci from the building company Larderello. The church, dedicated to the Virgin, has a long polygonal plan and presents a single nave surrounded by a low ambulatory.
In addition, it is enclosed by an area with a square plan, including the presbyterate, the choir, the sacristy and the basement of the bell tower. The central area emphasizes the assembly, the gathering of men waiting for sacrifice, while the ambulatory allows walking, thus making up an amphitheatre around this choir. The structure of the church is axial, symmetric, except for the elliptic pavilion of the baptistery. The new church was consecrated the 1st of May 1958.
