Oratorio di Sant’Antonio, Pomarance - Pisa in Tuscany
After the transfer of the name of San Donato to the church inside the castle, the small church was dedicated to St. Anthony the Abbot even if, owing to a superimposition of cults, it is St. Anthony from Padua who is venerated today. The oratory is considered as the most ancient religious building on the metalliferous hills. Its construction dates back to the period between the 10th and 11th century.
It presents a single nave with beamed ceiling and semi-circular apse; the wall face consists of superimposed square ashlars of sandstone and, in the middle, there is a small window with double splay. The façade presents a portal with monolithic architrave, a trapezium-shaped stone. The oratory, which stands in the open country, leads one to believe that in the past there was a rural centre, probably before the castle of Serrazzano was completed.
