Pieve di San Giovanni Battista - Pisa in Tuscany
Documented in the Middle Ages, it stands on an Etruscan necropolis and in the first decades of the 19th century it was radically altered by keeping only the façade with blind arcades. The interior, provided with two side aisles and a nave, is decorated with a striking group of frescoes of 1837 with “Scenes of Christ’s life” by the neoclassical painter Luigi Ademollo.
Noteworthy are also the “Virgin and Saints” by Vincenzo Tamagni (1525) and the “Annunciation” by Cristoforo Roncalli, better known as the Pomarancio. The parsonage keeps a “Virgin and Child” attributed to the School of Siena (1329). On the counter-façade an inscription reminds the visitors of the Greek humanistic poet, Michele Marullo, who died in 1550 in the river Cecina.
