Santuario della Madonna del Libro, Castelnuovo Val di Cecina - Pisa in Tuscany
The origin of the sanctuary is linked with a miraculous event that occurred during the war Lorenzo de’ Medici declared on Volterra in 1472. The defenceless population supplicated the Virgin’s protection until She appeared to a woman of the village promising peace and protection. The devotion to “Our Mother of the Thanksgiving”, also known as the “book Virgin”, comes from this occasion and is still alive today.
The church has a T-shape with a trilateral portico and massive external bastions supporting asymmetric arcades. It takes its name from a painting by Matteo di Pierantonio de’ Gondi representing the “Virgin and Child” reading a book, crowned by two angles, which was venerated until 1958 when, for safety reasons, the church was closed to the public and the painting was transferred to the parish church of San Bartolomeo where it is still kept today. Not very far from the church is the Milk Fountain, a miraculous fountain from which the women drink in order to breastfeed their babies.
