Chiesa di Sant'Andrea - Pisa in Tuscany
Built in the Middle Ages, it underwent several alterations, especially in the 19th century, but some parts keep their original structure. The interior with a single nave is characterised by a stone holy-water basin, used as a christening font, bearing the following sentence: “Bellonae Sacr. Donax Aug. Lib. Mesor D.D.” The holy-water basin comes from the farm of San Valentino, where three columns Roman graves and coins were found, in confirmation that the monastery of San Pietro was built in Palazzolo where there were a Roman villa and a small temple of the goddess Bellona.
We do not know whether a Lombard community followed a Roman settlement, as the name “Palatiolum” would attest. The marble frame with Lombard knot in bas-relief, found in this place and today kept in the municipal seat of Monteverdi, probably belongs to the monastery of san Pietro.
