Chiesa Monastero di San Pietro in Palazzolo - Pisa in Tuscany
The foundation of the Benedictine monastery dates back to 754 and is linked with the figure of St. Walfredo, the progenitor of the della Gherardesca family. In the 11th century it acquired great importance, but at the end of the 12th century the monastery was transferred to the area of the present-day farm of San Valentino.
Due to the assaults of the Pisan and Florentine troops, the monastery, after becoming Vallombrosiano in 1298, was abandoned in 1561. The interior consisted of a single nave with an apse. The façade and the roofing disappeared over the centuries, while a part of the left side and the transept are left. The masonry face is made up of perfectly cut ashlars from Alberese, which are two-coloured on the right side and alternate with rows of brickwork.
