Necropoli etrusca di Casale Marittimo - Pisa in Tuscany
Of considerable interest is the Etruscan necropolis of Casa Nocera, with tombs dating from the 7th and 6th centuries BC whose rich funerary equipment denote a wealthy and powerful caste. Very famous is the tholos tomb dating from the 5th century and found by chance in 1896 at Poggiarella.
It is a circular structure 3.3 metres in diameter with a "dromos" (corridor) and a "tholos" (false dome) covered by a mound of earth. In 1937 remains of two Roman villas documenting the passage from the Etruscan to the Roman period were found at La Pieve and Il Poggio. According to popular belief, there were two castles in the area, Casale Vecchio and Casale Nuovo, even though no archaeological find has ever provided evidence of their existence.
