Le due Badie, Castellina Marittima - Pisa in Tuscany
Built in a place rich in woody areas, an ideal place for the coenobitical and hermitical life, the “Due Badie” (the two abbeys) originate from two different monasteries situated in a place originally known as Moxi: the one was dedicated to the Saviour and the other to the Virgin Mary, San Quirico and San Torpé, better known as “San Quirico a Moxi” or “delle Colline”.
Built around the year 1000, the buildings were still in a good state in 1598, but there were no monks. Today the ruins of the Abbey of San Quirico have nearly disappeared in the vegetation, while the Abbey of San Salvatore, situated on the hillock of the Dispensa, keeps fragments of the walls of the church, built with big square stones, and a portion of the façade, divided by pillars and characterised by stripes of white marble and serpentine with rough capitals.
