Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo - Pisa in Tuscany
It was built between 1885 and 1891 and replaced a building datable to the 8th century, situated at the foot of the castle. The austere façade, characterised by a huge order with smooth pilasters that support a triangular tympanum, is embellished by a statue of St. Michael the Archangel.
Inside the church stands out the big arch of the presbyterate supported by double marbled columns decorated with stucco capitals. The ceiling of the nave, the dome and the apse with “Stories of Christ and St. Michael” (1950-1954) were decorated by Antonio Gaioni. Striking are two 14th-century wooden panels: “St. Michael fighting the drake” attributed to Bernardo Daddi and the “Virgin and Child with musician angels” by Giovanni di Bartolomeo Cristiani.
