Cappella dei Vicari - Pisa in Tuscany
The chapel is situated inside the fortress provided with Medicean fortifications, but it dates back to the 11th century; it was attacked and razed to the ground several times. You get at the chapel from the village below by means of a staircase of one hundred steps leading to the square onto which look the Palazzo Pretorio and the chapel, dedicated to the Virgin’s Wedding and to the Saints Joseph and Filippo Neri.
The coat of arms on the façade attests that the small building dates back (or was rebuilt) to the time of the vicar Carlo Buontalenti since it was erected between 1689 and 1692. Noteworthy are five small cells from which the prisoners could hear mass. The interior keeps some fragments of 18th-century decorations.
