Chiesa dei SS Maria Assunta e Leonardo - Pisa in Tuscany
The church was already existing in the 10th century and underwent several alterations throughout the centuries: a plaque on the architrave of the portal reminds us that it was enlarged in 1420; the two marble statues, “The Angel” and “The Virgin Mary” by Andrea di Francesco Guardi, belong to the same period. In the church took place the solemn investiture of the Vicars who swore eternal allegiance to the statutes of Lari in front of the people.
The church was later restored in Baroque style and the frescoes probably disappeared in that period. The restoration work that gave the building a neo-Gothic appearance dates back to 1910; later, the relief in glazed terracotta depicting “The Virgin and Child” by Andrea della Robbia, coming from the chapel of the Castle, was placed on the left wall. Today the church keeps canvas of the 16th-18thcentury
