Its key component is the famous Leaning Tower, whose layers of heavy marble were constructed on a shifting subsoil foundation that has been the bane of Pisan engineers for more than 800 years. It seems that the tremulous soil underneath the Field of Miracles has exacted its price on the other buildings too, most notably San Michele dei Scalzi.

La Fortezza Medicea, Volterra - Pisa in Toscana
La Fortezza Medicea o “Mastio” è un vasto complesso militare collocato sulla cima del colle e si compone di due parti ben distinte: la Rocca antica, a pianta trapezoidale con al centro un possente torrione circolare, costruita nei pressi della Porta a Selci dal duca d’Atene Gualtieri di Brienne nel 1343; la Rocca Nuova, voluta da Lorenzo il Magnifico e costruita tra il 1472 e il 1475. Questa ha planimetria quadrilatera con possenti torri angolari, a pianta cilindrica, con nel centro la possente torre del Mastio, che dà nome a tutto il complesso. Le due rocche furono unite tra loro da un lungo edificio a due corpi paralleli, nei quali furono ricavate le caserme e le prigioni, tutt’oggi adibite ad area detentiva.
La fortezza si impone all’attenzione per la sua struttura, tipica di tutte le fortificazioni di quel periodo: muretto cordolato e sporgente con mensole e beccatelli di eleganza strutturale oltre alla più pratica funzionalità difensiva. Grazie a questo complesso il Signore di ... Read More...
