The Pisans also created one of the most beautiful squares in the world in the Campo dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles). Its key component is the famous Leaning Tower, whose layers of heavy marble were constructed on a shifting subsoil foundation that has been the bane of Pisan engineers for more than 800 years. It seems that the tremulous soil underneath the Field of Miracles has exacted its price on the other buildings too, most notably San Michele dei Scalzi.

Pieve dei SS Filippo e Giacomo, Castelnuovo Val di Cecina - Pisa in Toscana
Fu eretta dal vescovo Ildebrando nel 1186. La facciata a salienti presenta un paramento murario in conci squadrati e nella parte centrale tre grandi arcate: le esterne sono cieche e quella interna incornicia la porta.
Un occhio molto semplice sormonta l’armatura centrale mentre l’interno è a tre navate divise da pilastri con capitelli figurati; sul fianco della navata laterale destra si apre una finestra ad arco acuto con architrave dove è scolpita una scena di caccia; sempre sul lato destro della chiesa vi è il campanile a base quadrata. Un recente restauro ha messo in luce alcuni elementi di età romanica. Nelle vicinanze si trova la “Buca delle Fate”, un ipogeo etrusco del VI secolo a.C., di piccole dimensioni ma ben conservato.
