Pisa is most famous for its leaning campanile, yet its other equally notable coups include its long maritime legacy dating to 1000 BC, its prized university and its status as the birthplace of the world’s greatest physicist and astronomer, Galileo Galilei. The Pisans also created one of the most beautiful squares in the world in the Campo dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles). Its key component is the famous Leaning Tower, whose layers of heavy marble were constructed on a shifting subsoil foundation that has been the bane of Pisan engineers for more than 800 years. It seems that the tremulous soil underneath the Field of Miracles has exacted its price on the other buildings too, most notably San Michele dei Scalzi.

Museo della Civiltà Contadina, Palaia - Pisa in Toscana
Montefoscoli, pur essendo un piccolo borgo, offre al visitatore due irrinunciabili occasioni di sosta e di visita: la Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta ed il Museo della Civiltà Contadina. Quest’ultimo, fondato nel 1996, è una mostra permanente con sede in una casa risalente all’anno Mille ed acquistata nel secolo XVI dai nobili pisani Vaccà Berlinghieri. In seguito fu convertita in una fattoria e rinominata Palazzetto Filippeschi. In questa abitazione, a seguito di alcuni interventi di manutenzione nei locali sotterranei, fu rinvenuto un cunicolo medievale che fungeva da collegamento con l’antico Castello di Montefoscoli situato sulla sommità del borgo.Tale scoperta ha reso possibile la raccolta da parte della popolazione di molti attrezzi agricoli, rinvenuti tra la Corte ed i sotterranei del Palazzo, portati nei vari casolari della Valdera e restaurati.
